In this guide you will learn how to add and manage meters in Leanheat® Monitor.
A meter reaches Leanheat® Monitor in one of two ways:
Connected to a controller: the meter is wired to an ECL and Leanheat® Monitor reads it through that controller.
Standalone: the meter is connected through a gateway, with no controller involved, and becomes its own device in Leanheat® Monitor.
The two halves of this guide cover them in turn.
Meters connected to a controller
There are two ways to add a meter that is wired to an ECL, and they differ in who reads the meter. With a device meter the ECL reads the meter and Leanheat® Monitor reads the ECL. With an M-bus meter Leanheat® Monitor reads the meter's M-bus telegram itself and the ECL only passes it through. A meter can only be one of the two in Leanheat® Monitor, not both.
Meter slots
Every meter sits in a numbered slot. The slot is not just a label: reports and comparisons across devices are built on slot numbers, so you can compare slot 1 on every device in one go.
The slot ranges are fixed:
Device meters use slots 1 to 10. An ECL296 or ECL310 has five of them, slots 1 to 5. Slots 6 to 10 are only used by OPR20 devices.
M-bus meters use slots 11 to 20.
Which meter you put in which slot is your choice, but use the same slot for the same purpose on every device. For example: the consumption heat meter always in slot 1, the domestic hot water meter always in slot 2, the water meter always in slot 3.
If one device has its heat meter in slot 1 and another has it in slot 2, comparing those meters or building a report across both devices becomes difficult, because the report asks for a slot number and gets a different meter on each device.
Adding a device meter
With a device meter the ECL reads the meter, and Leanheat® Monitor reads the ECL. It stores data and shows live data for the following measurements:
- Energy
- Volume
- Flow
- Power
- Supply temperature
- Return temperature
Meter live data is seen on the right hand side of the flow diagram.
To add a meter as a device meter connect it to the M-bus terminals on the ECL and execute the scan command on the ECL. To execute the scan command navigate to the device in Leanheat® Monitor to which you connected the meter to. On the right hand side click the gear icon to open the settings and click on "M-bus". Under "M-bus configuration", open the "Start scanning" setting, select the "SCAN" command and click "Save". The scanning can take up to 20 minutes and after the meters you connected are visible in Leanheat® Monitor.
Meter types
A device meter has a meter type, and the type decides which values the ECL reads from the meter and therefore what Leanheat® Monitor can show and store. The type has to match what the meter actually delivers, so a meter set to the wrong type will show missing or wrong values.
There are six types, 0 to 5. Type 0 is the default. Type 5 requires ECL firmware 2.50 or newer.
You can set the type on the ECL itself, or in Leanheat® Monitor: open the device, click the gear icon on the right hand side to open the settings and click on "M-bus". Each meter has its own "Address", "Type" and "Scan Time (s)", and you save each field on its own.
The table below shows what each type delivers, and in which unit. Two differences are worth knowing before you choose: Type 1 and Type 3 report accumulated energy in MWh where the others report it in kWh, and Type 4 delivers four volumes and four energies but no temperatures, flow or power.
| Type 0 (default) | Type 1 | Type 2 | Type 3 | Type 4 | Type 5 | |
| Flow temp. (0,01 °C) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | - | Yes |
| Return temp. (0,01 °C) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | - | Yes |
| Flow (0,1 l/h) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | - | Yes |
| Power (0,1 kW) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | - | Yes |
| Acc. Volume (0,1 m3) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Acc. Energy | 0,1 kWh | 0,1 MWh | 0,1 kWh | 0,1 MWh | 0,1 kWh | 0,1 kWh |
| Tariff1 Acc. Energy | - | - | 0,1 kWh | 0,1 MWh | - | 0,1 kWh |
| Tariff2 Acc. Energy | - | - | 0,1 kWh | 0,1 MWh | - | 0,1 kWh |
| Up time (days) | - | - | Yes | Yes | - | Yes |
| Current time | - | - | Yes | Yes | - | Yes |
| Flow MAX (0,1 l/h) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | - | Yes |
| Power MAX (0,1 kW) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | - | Yes |
| Max T forward | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | - | Yes |
| Max T return | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | - | Yes |
| Storage * Acc. Energy (0,1 kWh) | Yes | Yes | Yes | Yes | - | Yes |
| Acc. Energy Backwards / Cooling (0,1 kWh) | - | - | - | - | - | Yes |
| Error status | - | - | bitmask | bitmask | - | 32 bit |
| Acc. Volume 2 to 4 (0,1 m3) | - | - | - | - | Yes | - |
| Acc. Energy 2 to 4 (0,1 kWh) | - | - | - | - | Yes | - |
Every type also carries the meter address, the type, the scan time and the meter ID or serial number. "Current time" uses the structure defined by M-bus, and the error status is a bitmask defined by the heat meter, 32 bit on Type 5.
Adding an M-bus meter
If you would like to store data that the device meter does not provide, add the meter as an M-bus meter instead. Leanheat® Monitor then reads the meter's M-bus telegram itself, with the ECL only passing it through, which does not limit what you read from the meter.
Adding a meter that is already a device meter as an M-bus meter removes its device meter definition in Leanheat® Monitor. The M-bus meter takes precedence, and the same meter cannot be both at once. On the ECL itself nothing changes: the meter stays a device meter there, which matters when the ECL application needs its values to run correctly.
To add a meter as an M-bus meter navigate to the "Devices" tab and select a device you wish to add the meter to. Click on the "Meters" tab above the flow diagram and click "+ Add M-bus meter". In the first step enter the meter name and the M-bus address. After Leanheat® Monitor reads the meter you will see manufacturer information and you need to select the readings period of the meter and the meter slot (meter slot represents the consecutive meter number). In the next step tick the check box next to the registers you would like to be displayed and the data stored in Leanheat® Monitor. For each register also verify or pick the correct suffix from the possible options which are displayed in the drop down menu when clicking "Suffix". To finish adding the meter click "Save".
Meter metadata
To edit meter metadata such as meter name, replacement date and meter purpose (billing, control, production, consumption) navigate to the device which has the meter connected, click on the "Meters" tab above the flow diagram, select the meter you would like to view and edit the metadata of from the list and click "Edit".
Meter replacement dates need to be set to see the dates in the "Next replacement date" widget.
Meter replacements
A meter replacement has to be entered in Leanheat® Monitor whenever a meter is replaced physically. You enter the accumulated values (volume, energy, tariff) from the previous meter and the accumulated values from the new meter, so that the reports created in Leanheat® Monitor keep accurate values.
To enter a meter replacement firstly click on the device in the "Devices" tab which has the meter that was replaced connected. On the selected device navigate to the "Meters" tab above the flow diagram. Next click on the meter that was replaced, click on the "Meter replacements" tab under "Basic info" and click "+ Add meter replacement". In the menu that opens enter the accumulated values of the old meter and the accumulated values of the new meter. To finish the meter replacement process click "Save".
Standalone meters
A standalone meter is not connected to a controller. It reaches Leanheat® Monitor through a gateway and appears as its own device. A standalone meter has no flow diagram. Opening it shows a "Properties" tab instead, with the meter metadata, the manufacturer information and the latest readouts side by side, and the usual device tabs such as "Graph", "Readings", "Alarms" and "Reminders" are there as well.
What you need
Two gateways can be used:
SonoCollect 111/112: meters connect to it either over wired M-bus or over Modbus. Both connection types can be active on the same SonoCollect at the same time, and Leanheat® Monitor reads the meters from both.
Teltonika TRB143: wired M-bus only. Up to 6 meters can be connected without a repeater.
The gateway has to be configured before the meters can be connected in Leanheat® Monitor. Existing SonoCollect configurations cannot be reused, so contact support for a new configuration.
Connecting standalone meters
Navigate to the "Admin" tab, open "Device Administration" and click "Connect" which is in the upper left corner. Then select from the list:
"Connect M-bus meters" for meters wired to the gateway over M-bus.
"Connect Modbus meters" for meters connected to a SonoCollect over Modbus.
Choose the "Gateway" the meters are connected to and click "Sync". Leanheat® Monitor lists what it finds under "Available meters" on the left, and what is already connected under "Meters already added" on the right. Tick the meters you want, move them across with the arrow buttons between the two lists, and click "Apply".
The meter lists are then replaced by the reading period step, where you set how often the selected meters are read. Click "Apply" again to finish. If you are only removing meters, the reading period step is skipped.
A SonoCollect that carries both protocols appears in both lists, so you add its M-bus meters under "Connect M-bus meters" and its Modbus meters under "Connect Modbus meters", using the same gateway both times.
