In this guide you will learn why a device ends up in the Failed list of the SWC Device Manager in Leanheat® Monitor, what to check on the device, and how to try the enrollment again. For the enrollment procedure itself, see How to enroll your devices in SWC.
The three most common causes
In the SWC Device Manager you can open "Why my devices failed?", which lists the causes we see most often. Smart Weather Compensation enrollment may fail if:
The heating curve temperature values are not sequentially ordered. The temperatures along the curve must rise or fall consistently, without a value that breaks the sequence.
The maximum flow temperature limit exceeds 90°C.
The device connectivity is lost. The controller must be online and communicating during the whole enrollment.
Address and location
SWC needs to know exactly where a building is, because the whole service is built on a localized weather forecast. Two things are checked:
The address must be complete. Country, city, street name and street number all have to be filled in. A missing street number alone is enough to stop the enrollment.
The coordinates must be inside Europe. If they are not, the device shows the message "Device has invalid coordinates: not in Europe".
Both are corrected on the device itself in Leanheat® Monitor, and you can review them during the "Location" step of the enrollment wizard.
Device and application requirements
A device that does not meet these conditions will not enroll, and in most cases will not appear under Available at all:
It is an ECL Comfort 310, connected with the ECL connection type.
Its software version is 1.42 or higher. This is the version that introduced the offset functionality SWC depends on.
It is online.
Its application is one of the heating applications supported by SWC. The supported list is maintained by Danfoss and does change over time, so if you are unsure whether your application qualifies, contact Danfoss support.
Heating curve and sensor values
When a device enrolls, SWC reads the heating curve of every heating circuit that is in use, up to four circuits (HC1 to HC4). Circuits marked as not in use are skipped and do not have to satisfy anything. The values on the circuits that are in use have to be inside the ranges SWC accepts.
Note that these ranges are SWC's own, and are narrower than what the ECL itself will let you set. A device can therefore be configured perfectly well for normal operation and still be rejected by SWC. Note also that a problem on a single circuit stops the enrollment of the whole device, not just that circuit.
Every heating circuit in use has a working flow temperature sensor. If a circuit is in use but its flow temperature probe is missing, enrollment fails.
At least one heating circuit is in use. A device with no circuit in use cannot be enrolled.
Heat curve slope between 0 and 4.
Minimum flow temperature between 0 and 90°C.
Maximum flow temperature between 0 and 90°C.
Desired room temperature between 5 and 40°C.
Flow temperature between 0 and 250°C.
A value outside any of these ranges results in an error during enrollment.
Trying again after a fix
Correct the cause on the device, whether that is the address, the heating curve, the maximum flow temperature or the connection.
Navigate to "SWC" and select "SWC Device Manager".
Select "Failed", tick the device and use "Retry SWC enrollment".
If you would rather clear the device out of the queue first, use "Cancel devices" and enroll it again from "Available".
Remember that a successful enrollment still takes up to 72 hours before the first results appear, so a device that has just been retried will sit in Processing for a while.
If it keeps failing
If a device fails repeatedly and none of the causes above applies, contact Danfoss support and include the device serial number. That lets us look at the specific controller rather than the general case.
